Stanhopes, or ‘peeps’, are miniature microphotographic lenses incorporated
in a range of souvenir and novelty collectables produced from the
mid-19th century onwards. This well written and fully illustrated volume
is an essential reference guide for established collectors and enthusiasts,
and a fascinating introduction for those who have yet to discover the
amazing world of Stanhopes. It is the most comprehensive book on this
subject, is based on original research and contains much previously
unpublished material. It traces the history of microphotography, linked
with the invention and manufacture of Stanhope lenses.
It describes the commercial acumen of René
Dagron who founded the French Stanhope industry and developed
worldwide ‘mail order’ microphotography. It will appeal not
